Project Countries

The Urban Reproductive Health Initiative (Urban RH Initiative), implemented in four countries, aims to empower women and men to determine the number and spacing of their births. The Initiative uses a three-pronged approach, seeking to:

  1. Improve the quality of family planning services,
  2. Integrate quality family planning with maternal and newborn health, HIV/AIDS and post-abortion care programs, and
  3. Increase the private sector share of family planning programs.

The four country programs in India, Kenya, Nigeria and Senegal are developing interventions to create demand for and sustain use of contraceptives among marginalized urban populations. Advocating for increased funding and necessary financial mechanisms, the country programs seek to ensure a supportive policy environment that enables the urban poor to access family planning supplies and services.

The country programs have identified cities that are ready for change and conducted comprehensive baseline surveys that will be used to measure, monitor and evaluate progress over the life of the Initiative. Now in the third year of the project, country specific interventions include conducting mass media campaigns, supporting public-private-partnerships and increasing the range of methods available, among others.
